Vlogging vs. Blogging

This week has been an exciting one, all leading up to our second and much-anticipated performance at AISG, the American International School. With the many of our athletes being students at this particular school and much of the audience including children who attend our gym, we have been looking forward to this performance opportunity over the past few weeks.

With each week I spend here, my role becomes much clearer and I am becoming more IMG_8331confident in my abilities to be more than simply an Instructor. From setting performance orders, to keeping in contact with parent concerns, to ordering uniforms, my role as Head Dance Coach is informing me in more ways than I could have ever expected. However, instead of writing a long post this week, I have created a Vlog of all that this new job entails! From the kids I teach to the performances we take on, I am excited by the energy that surrounds me and happy to share it with friends and family back home. I am sure that there will be another lengthy post in the future, but for now I’d like to leave this here and let the smiles on these athletes’ faces (and mine) do the talking.

Ni Hao from China!

IMG_3246I can hardly believe that this dream is a reality but I cannot wait to see where it will take me over the next three months. Curious to see how my time is spent while I am living and teaching in Guangzhou, China, head over to the UDA China tab and explore my blog and media gallery.

In an effort to keep things organized, this separate page and blog will function much like my Dance Denmark one did and I look forward to updating friends and family on all that I am experiencing while away.

Beyond Ballet Basics

When I first decided to take on Directed Teaching this semester, I was more nervous than I expected. In the Dance Team world, the technique that stresses me the most to teach is Kick. In the world of Dance Studios and Education, the technique that causes me the same stress is Ballet. Both stemming from a feeling of lack of knowledge, I suppose it would make sense why taking on this new responsibility seemed a bit intimidating. I feel that growing up, I did not have the most codified and effective ballet training and that the majority of my growth has happened over the past three years at Ohio State. How was I supposed to educate and enlighten others in something that I still needed educated on and enlightened in myself? Furthermore, how was I supposed to do so for my peers – some of who are likely to have more knowledge than I in this particular genre?

Welcome to My (Somehow) Busier Life

DSC_0247green smokeOne semester down and I cannot believe that at this point in my life, I am over half-way finished with my college career. Of all the semesters so far, this has – to my surprise – been the busiest. Challenging me physically, intellectually, artistically, and spiritually, I have found myself riding the “wave” and “rollercoaster” that is Junior Year as a Dance Major here at Ohio State. However, above all, the last weeks of this semester have left me to realize how at home I am in this Department and how right everything feels that I am doing.

Riding the Wave

I have created short studies, though I have critiqued such works to all end and have left myself feeling lost as a creator. Regardless of reasoning for my feelings, I felt as though my studies were to be “precious” – that interesting word that I still do not have a clear definition for. My perfectionist mindset got the best of me and I started to question my choices in ways that somewhat prevented growth. I enrolled in Special Topics class in the hopes of combatting this mindset and becoming more comfortable in my choreographer skin – in addition to the fact that I missed learning from and being inspired by Eddie Taketa on a weekly basis.

Checking In from Denmark!

i am: A Reflection of ’16 – ’17

I was told going into Sophomore year that it would be the hardest yet. I organized my schedule and life keeping that in mind, not exactly knowing what the year would bring.thumb_IMG_9859_1024 In some ways, I agree. Sophomore year is hard. However, for me it was a year of growth physically, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. As I reflect now, I do so with a new mindset and perspective, thankful for all the experiences and people that surrounded me throughout both semesters. I find myself in a place of clear mind and intention, while still growing and changing with each day and each adventure.

Four Minds, Eight Bodies

This semester, I had the opportunity to take Group Forms as part of my Composition focus. This class included a variety of assignments and readings which were geared towards engaging us intellectually and artistically. The goal was to ultimately grow as choreographers, especially in the circumstance of both engaging in choreography with others and choreographing on bodies other than our own. This being said, discussions included topics such as bodies in space, relationships of bodies to each other, and the constant question of whether or not music is essential in the final product. For me, this class proved to be more of an intellectual stimulus, leading me to new questions and ideas which I hope to use as I continue to pursue my focus curriculum in Composition.

Initial Explorations, Final Studies

screen-shot-2016-12-07-at-11-37-36-pmAs my second Composition course comes to a close, it is interesting to recognize the new exploration that I am engaging in as a result. Coming from a competitive studio background, my relationship to music has always been extremely direct, as stated in my last post. With this Final Composition Study, I explored what it meant to establish a variety of relationships to the same piece of music, comparing and contrasting with the music genre and its expected dance style. Still in the stages of exploration, I look forward to expanding upon these interests and learning more about what my relationship to music is and how my past and present training combines to form my movement vocabulary.

Composing New Knowledge

As my third semester comes to a close, I have found myself thinking about what the rest of
my time as a Buckeye will consist of. I have started to think about my focus curriculum, how I will approach it, and how I will apply it. Planning to declare mscreen-shot-2016-12-03-at-11-42-13-pmy focus in Performance and Composition, I have found this class to be especially helpful in growing my perspectives and tendencies, pushing me to make new choices when c
horeographing both to silence and to music. This semester, I have developed new
techniques for generating movement, both through practice in class and through viewing performances such as Black Mountain, Dido and Aeneas, and Dance Downtown. I firmly believe that as I begin to work towards my senior project – choreographing a piece – these new techniques and ideas play a large role in both my process and success.
